USING THE INTERNET WITH NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR

Connecting to the internet is a two-part process.

Step One:

Place your cursor (arrow) on the NetsCorp icon. Double click. Your user name should appear in all lower case letters. Type in your password. (Be sure to type this EXACTLY as it was given to you. Do not put capitals where they do not belong. Do not put in spaces, commas, or any other marks. Click connect.

(A screen will appear that tells you that the system is dialing; then verifying the user name and password. After this a box will appear that says you are connected; a clock shows the amount of time you have been connected. Nothing else will happen at this point.)

Step Two:

The NetsCorp icon is used to connect your computer to the internet. It does not have the ability to do anything on the internet. To work on the internet you must open your browser, which allows you to go to different locations on the internet. Your browser will

also include an email program for sending and receiving email.

You may connect to the internet using any browser you choose. Each browser works slightly differently. We will be working with Netscape Communicator. The Netscape Communicator icon has a picture of a lighthouse. Place your cursor (arrow) on the Netscape icon. Double click.

This will open a page called your home page. This page will be the NetsCorp web site.

Location Bar:

The location bar runs across the top of the screen from left to right. If you know the address you want to go to, type it in this box and hit the enter key. This will take you straight to that particular address.

Searching the Internet:

If you do not know the address, you will need to do a search. Scroll down the NetsCorp home page and on the right hand side, click on Search. This opens a page of various search engines.

A search engine is similar to the card catalog for the library. Each  search engine is apt to turn up slightly different results and people  usually end up with a couple of favorite search engines.

If you are doing a search for “superbowl”, you should not type in just the  word superbowl. This would result in an excessive number of choices and  would include information about restaurants, tickets, teams, and more. Be as specific as possible to narrow down your search. Include the name of the team, the year or other identifiers that will help eliminate  things that you are not interested in.

Toolbar Buttons:

At the top left hand side of the screen are a Back and a Forward button. These buttons allow you to flip back and forth between screens just like  you would turn the pages of a book. If the first site that you go to  isn't what you want, hit the Back button and you will return to your  search results so that you can try again.

The Home button can be used at anytime to reload the NetsCorp home page.

The Reload button is used whenever there is a page that doesn't load properly. Sometimes, if you hit the Reload button, the page will  load properly the second time around.

When you are working on the internet, you will be moving your cursor  across alot of screens. Whether you are on the NetsCorp home page or  working with the results of a search, anytime the mouse arrow turns into  a hand, this is a location that you can click on. You will then be transported to a new location.

Bookmarks:

When you discover a site that you know you will be returning to frequently, bookmark it. This allows you to save the address. Every time  that you want to return, you can do so with a simple click instead of  having to type the address out. While the location is open on the bottom  of your screen, do the following:

**on the left of the location bar, click on Bookmarks.

**next click on Add Bookmark. The  next time that you open up your bookmark

file, this particular address  will have been saved for you.

Email:

To open up your email software, click on Communicator and then Messenger.

Receiving Email:

When someone sends email to your address, the mail is saved on our  server til you retrieve it. This is similar to getting your mail from  the post office box. The mail just waits there til you take it out. When you click on Get Mail, you are moving your

mail from our server to your  computer.

On the left hand side of the screen is a collection of folders. The mail  program always opens with the inbox. Your email messages load on the  right hand side of the screen. A list will appear which includes the  name of the sender and the subject of the message. Click on the message  that you want to view and it will open up on the bottom half of your  screen. You can scroll up and down to read the full message.

Sending Email:

To send a message of your own, click on the New Msg button. This opens up a mail composition box. Fill in the email address of the person to  whom you are sending mail. An email address will always have an @ symbol in it.

Type in the subject of your message. The box at the bottom is where you type your actual message. When you have finished, click on the Send Button. This sends your message off of your computer and out into the internet.

Address Book:

When someone sends you a message, you might want to save their address in your address book. While their message is open on your screen, click on Message, and then on Add to Address Book. When the address box opens up, click on OK.

When you are sending a message, if you want to retrieve an address that  you have saved in your address book, click on Address. Click on the name of the person that you are sending the message to. This will highlight the name. Next click on To: and then click

OK. The address will  automatically be added to the email that you are creating.

This pamphlet covers the very basics of using the internet and sending email. For more details, tricks and tips, click on Help. Then click on Help Contents. This opens up a popup screen that covers much more information about using Netscape Communicator.
