Chuck and Clema Owen, Easter 2008
THERE’S AN EYE WATCHING YOU. All Bible accounts should have a special message for or to us. Here is one and an application. At the trial of Jesus, Peter was the one -- or one of them anyway -- who denied knowing or being with Jesus. Course Jesus had told him he would. Peter did not believe it, but in the end he did. Then, as he did, according to one account, he looked up and Jesus was looking down at him. Can you imagine! Jesus looking at this close disciple who denied him? Well, that is what happened. Jesus’ eyes looked at him. Peter knew that Jesus knew! We read that and accuse Peter! What a traitor! we say. Here is the point: When we do wrong things, Jesus is looking at us, too. Do we ever think of it like that? Do we look up and see him looking? Or do we think our sin is in secret? They are not. Jesus sees. Jesus knows. Just like he knew what Peter did, he knows what we do. Doesn't matter how we go against him, either. He knows. He knows when we absent ourselves from the assembly; he knows when we don't help someone who needs help; he knows when we don't do like we should do -- in whatever the circumstance. We should remember that courtyard event, but don't stop there; apply the situation to us. Learn from Peter and Jesus. It is like the song, "There is an all-seeing eye watching you." Has Jesus wondered today about our commitment?
JULY VISITORS PLAN. We have a good chance of hosting 35 on July 26 and 27. I had an email request from Karrie Ducey of the Lakewood Church of Christ in Colorado requesting assistance on their travel to Monterrey on a mission trip. The 35 will include youth and adults. What I have offered, they seem to have accepted, is to allow them to bed down at the Northside building Saturday night with sleeping bags and have the space tidied up by 10 am Sunday. They would be with us Sunday for Bible study and worship, similar as we did for the Alabama group a few weeks ago. I also offered that we would provide donuts and drink for breakfast and perhaps sack lunches to send them on their way. I will let you know more as we finalize things. I look on this as something we can do for good. We might not be able to go but we can help those who do. It is nice that people call on us to help this way.
APRIL FINANCIAL QUIK LOOK. We began the month with $567.83 in the general fund and ended at $303.79. Income totaled $1,373.69 including $63.69 dividend from IBC stock on 4/18. Expenses were $1,637.73. Savings totaled $36,638.78, which included a modest gain in stock value for IBC. Our savings value is $879.29 over Dec. 31, 2007. Just an observation: While our general fund looks and is pretty low, we have not had to pull from savings since September 2007. I think that is a good thing. We have it if needed but it is good if we make it without it. I think we can be proud that we, with God's help, are "meeting the budget."
SINGING POSTPONED. Finally realized it. Next Sunday is Mothers Day. Not a good time for a good turnout for singing. Singing has been postponed to be rescheduled. Sorry, mothers, for almost trampling our your day.
BIRTHDAYS. Emily Del Los Santos had a birthday on May 1.
SUNDAY RECAP. Thanks to Matt for a great lesson of faith. We had 17 present, with a contribution of $554.00. In attendance were Chuck, Clema, Jean, Jeoffrey, Jonathan, Roger, Margaret, Nina, Sandra, Matt, Leslie, Emily Kate, Chad, Melissa, Derek, Michaela, and Elisa. Carrie was out sick. Sandra's husband Steve was ill. Don't have an accounting of the rest but pray they are all OK. We enjoyed a great meal together.
TO SERVE SUNDAY. Roger, singing; Chuck, message; Lord's Supper, to be announced.
